ALUMINUM ALLOY 7075
General Characteristics
This is a precipitaion-hardening alloy displaying good strength and resistance to corrosion. It was secretly developed in 1943 by Japan’s Sumitomo Metal and used for airframe production by the Japanese Navy.
Applications
Aircraft structural parts are the most typical application, but the alloy is further used in armaments, hang glider frames and rock climbing equipment.
Forging
The recommended forging temperature range for this alloy is 880-730 ºF (470-390 ºC)
Heat Treatment
Full anneal at 775 ºF (415 ºC) for 2-3 hours, air cool
Solution treat at 860-930ºF (460-500 ºC) for 10 mins to 1 hour, followed by water quench.
Precipitation treat, T6 at 245-255 ºF (120-125 ºC)
Machinability
The alloy displays good machinability., particularly in the T6 condition.
Weldability
The alloy is not recommended for welding, mostly due to its high strength and residual stresses that would ensue from the welding operation.
