General characteristics of Hastelloy W
This alloy is a solid-solution-strengthened superalloy that was developed primarily as a filler metal for welding dissimilar alloys. It is widely used for this purpose in the gas turbine, aerospace and chemical process industries.
Applications
The alloy resists weld cracking in restrained joints of precipitation-hardening alloys and as such is widely used for joining such alloys. It is also used in ring-type applications in older gas turbine engines. Hastelloy W is oxidation resistant to 1400ºF (760ºC.)
Forging
The alloy may be forged between 2200 and 1900ºF (1200 and 1040º) following a uniform heating and soaking. For optimum heat and corrosion resistance the alloy should be solution treated following forging.
Heat treatment
No heat treatment is required for weld deposits. For wrought products a solution anneal, for 15 minutes at 2165ºF (1185ºC) followed by water quenching is normally applied.
