Rough-Machining Included with Every Order
Reduce Machining Time and Lower Production Costs
At All Metals & Forge Group, every forged part we manufacture is delivered rough-machined to a surface condition of 250 RMS and to within 3 mm of the customer’s specified finished dimensions. This value-added service is included at no additional charge.
While other forging suppliers deliver components in an as-forged condition, AMFG takes the manufacturing process several steps further. By removing scale, eliminating the decarburized surface layer, and bringing the forging closer to its final dimensions, we help customers reduce machining time, simplify production planning, and lower total manufacturing costs.
The result is a cleaner, more consistent, near-net-shape forging, ready for inspection and better prepared for final machining.
More Value Than an As-Forged Component
As-forged parts typically require substantial preparation before they can be inspected or moved into final machining. Heavy scale, surface irregularities, excess material, and decarburization increase machining time, tool wear, handling requirements, and overall production costs.
AMFG addresses these challenges before the part leaves our facility.
Every forging receives machining at two critical stages of production:
- After forging, the component is machined to remove surface scale and excess material.
- After heat treatment, the forging is machined again to remove the decarburized layer.
This two-stage process produces a cleaner, more uniform component while helping to ensure that the material delivered to the customer is suitable for inspection and subsequent final machining.

Rough-Machined to Within 3 mm of Finished Dimensions
Every one of our forgings is supplied to within 3 mm of the customer’s finished dimensions. By delivering near-net-shape forgings rather than oversized as-forged parts, we significantly reduce final machining time.
This provides several operational advantages:
- Less machine time per component
- Reduced cutting-tool consumption
- Lower labor and production costs
- Less material waste
- Faster movement from receiving to final machining
- More predictable production scheduling
- Improved visibility of the forging’s surface condition
For machine shops and manufacturers working with large, complex, or high-value forged components, reducing excess stock can create meaningful savings across the entire production process.
A 250 RMS Surface Condition Included at No Additional Cost
AMFG provides a 250 RMS surface finish as standard for every forging order. This surface condition creates a more consistent exterior than an as-forged finish and helps prepare the component for inspection, handling, shipping, and final machining.
A 250 RMS surface also provides increased corrosion protection during transportation. By removing loose scale and producing a more uniform surface, the forging is better protected from environmental exposure during shipment to the customer.
Preparing Every Forging for Ultrasonic Testing
Rough machining is also essential to another AMFG value-added service: Ultrasonic Testing.
Every forged part AMFG manufactures is also ultrasonically examined in accordance with ASTM A388/A388M by qualified in-house nondestructive testing personnel. Ultrasonic testing requires a suitable surface condition so the testing equipment can achieve proper contact and transmit sound waves effectively through the material. The 250 RMS surface condition provided with every order allows AMFG to perform a reliable ultrasonic examination before the forging is shipped.
Together, rough machining and ultrasonic testing give our customers greater confidence in the quality and integrity of our parts while reducing the number of outside services they might need to utilize.
Additional Machining and Surface Finish Options
Although every AMFG forging is supplied at 250 RMS, additional machining is available when a higher level of completion is required.
Other available surface finish options include:
- 125 RMS
- 64 RMS
- 32 RMS
- 16 RMS
These additional machining options allow our customers to choose the surface condition that best fits their inspection needs, manufacturing process, and final application.
Whether a project requires standard rough machining, closer dimensional control, or a substantially smoother finish, AMFG can provide a forging that has progressed further in the production process than our competitors’.
Reduce the True Cost of Your Forged Components
The purchase price of a forging is only one part of its total cost. It is important to consider machining time, labor, tooling, scrap, inspection, transportation, and the delays associated with coordinating with multiple third-party service providers.
AMFG’s value-added manufacturing approach helps reduce these hidden costs.
By including rough machining to 250 RMS, machining to within 3 mm of finished dimensions, and ultrasonic testing with every order, AMFG delivers more than an open-die forged part. We provide a thoroughly prepared component that can help streamline your manufacturing operation.
This approach is particularly valuable for machine shops, original equipment manufacturers, and industrial manufacturers that need to improve throughput without sacrificing quality.
