Titanium Properties

Titanium is a strong and lightweight transition metal with high resistance to corrosion. Titanium, for example, is not negatively affected by such commonly corrosive substances as salt water and chlorine. Titanium’s atomic weight is 22, and its chemical element symbol is Ti.

In addition to corrosion resistance, titanium’s properties include a rather high melting point of approximately 1,670° to 1,700° Centigrade, with a boiling point of approximately 3,290° Centigrade. In comparison with many other metals, titanium is a relatively poor conductor of heat and electricity. Chemically, titanium’s properties resemble those of zirconium.

Titanium’s combination of properties have long made it attractive to the aerospace industry, and it has found a wide range of uses in industrial applications due to advantages over other metals in some situations. Titanium’s tensile strength, for example, is comparable to that of many alloy steels, but its density is only around 60 percent of steel’s. This makes it ideal for situations where the use of lightweight materials is crucial.

Titanium’s relatively low coefficient of linear expansion also makes it suitable for applications in which the metal will be subjected to cyclical cooling and heating. As a leading supplier of specialty metals and designer alloys to clients around the world, All Metals & Forge (AM&F) carries an extensive array of titanium alloys and commercially pure titanium grades in a variety of mill forms. Custom forging services are also available. Let AM&F know of your titanium supply needs by calling (973)276-5000 or using the online RFQ form on this website to request a quote. Titanium Forging Processes

Titanium forgings are used for their durability and lightweight characteristics in a number of industries such as the aviation industry. As with other forgeable alloys, the mechanical properties of titanium alloys can be affected not just by alloy content, but by the forging and thermal processes utilized. Titanium is also highly reactive to oxygen, and titanium alloys must be protected during forging from contamination by oxygen and other elements, such as carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen.

Careful, continuous quality control is essential during titanium forging. As an indication of its commitment to quality, All Metals & Forge (AM&F) was the first metal and forging supply company in the United States to attain certification under the AS 9000 program. AM&F has maintained its ISO 9002 certification since March 1994. The company also has a continuous quality improvement program in place.

Titanium Metal Prices

Titanium prices are subject both to long term trends and periodic volatility. Higher costs for raw materials and energy, as well as increasing demand for titanium in a range of consumer products, work to increase titanium prices. Periodic episodes of excess titanium stocks, or sudden dips in demand (as when orders are cancelled for aircraft manufacture) cause downward price pressures.

Titanium itself is relatively abundant in the earth’s crust. Producing titanium commercially, however, it is a complex and expensive process with an end product that is normally referred to as titanium sponge. The costs of production (most commonly through a method known as the Kroll process) make titanium relatively expensive in comparison to its abundance.

Although the majority of titanium is used in the production of titanium dioxide, a powder with superior refractory qualities, the commercial and military aerospace industries remain major consumers of titanium metals. Additional applications for titanium in the chemical, medical, and consumer sectors of the economy create additional demand for titanium metal, but demand in the aerospace sector continues to play a significant role in titanium pricing.

All Metals & Forge (AM&F) provides forged and mill warehouse titanium products to clients around the globe. The company is committed to fair pricing, and institutes a number of measures to help customers achieve cost savings and reduce the effects of metal pricing volatility. The company also regularly links to metal pricing information on this website, so that metal buyers may be informed of important trends in the metals marketplace. Titanium Pipe

Titanium pipe provides a combination of attractive properties. It has the strength of steel but is approximately 60 percent lighter. Titanium pipe also offers flexibility comparable to that of a number of other materials, while providing superior corrosion resistance.

It’s not surprising, therefore, that titanium pipe has proved increasingly useful in a wide variety of industries. It can be cost effectively used in marine applications, in refineries, and in pulp and paper processing plants where bleach is used. Chemical processing, power, and petrochemical plants are also prime candidates for titanium pipe.

Titanium pipe has also gained increasing use in oil and gas extraction, and in food processing industries. Industries like these that require heavy-duty corrosion resistance, along with titanium’s growing role in automotive components and a number of consumer goods (e.g., golf clubs), have expanded the customer base for titanium beyond the aerospace and and aviation industries.

Titanium Plates

Titanium alloys are often referred to as alpha, alpha-beta, or beta alloys. Titanium is stable in its alpha phase at temperatures up to 1,620? F. Titanium is stable in its beta phase at temperatures from 1,620? up to the metal’s melting point, which is approximately 3,040? F.

The crystalline structure of each phase varies slightly, with the alpha phase having a hexagonal close-packed crystalline structure, while the beta phase has a body-centered cubic structure. Additional elements in a titanium alloy may alter the temperature point at which titanium changes from its alpha to beta phase. There are also several grades of commercially pure titanium.

Titanium grades are available in most standard mill forms, such as plates, pipe, block, flat bar, sheet, wire, etc. All Metals & Forge (AM&F) provides titanium plates and other mill forms to a variety of customers around the world. In addition to titanium plates and mill forms, AM&F offers titanium forgings through its custom forging facility.

Titanium Rods

As the use of titanium has increased in the production of various consumer goods, the demand for titanium rods has expanded. Titanium rods are used by machine shops and manufacturers of items as diverse as golf clubs, automotive parts, and fishing rods, as well as in traditional industrial applications like aircraft engines. Titanium rods and plates are also gaining increased use in medical and orthopedic applications like bone repair and spinal instrumentation rods, because titanium does not react with the fluids of the human body.

Titanium’s obvious advantages include corrosion resistance, low density, and high tensile strength. Titanium can be used in one of several commercially pure grades or may be alloyed to increase certain characteristics. Whether used in consumer, medical, or industrial applications, titanium and its alloys prove to be durable components. Partly this is due to titanium’s high resistance to corrosion and tearing under stress, and to its low maintenance requirements.

As a steel and metals service center, AM&F supplies steels and specialty metals like titanium to industries, machine shops, government agencies, and major OEMs around the world. AM&F supplies titanium in all standard mill forms, such as rods, plates, sheets, wire, etc., and can also produce custom forgings. Titanium Sheet Metal

As with most other metals, titanium and titanium alloys can be melted and rolled into sheet form. Working with titanium in sheet metal form is subject to certain considerations. Titanium sheet and plate, for example, can harden significantly during forming.

Titanium plates or sheets can be sheared, punched, or perforated on standard equipment. Although sometimes considered to be difficult to machine, commercially pure titanium and its alloys can be machined in much the same way that some stainless steels are–at slow speeds and with relatively high feed rates. Titanium is not a good thermal conductor, so its low thermal conductivity may need to be offset by high flow of a coolant such as carbon dioxide.

Recommended toolings for titanium sheet metal are tungsten carbide designations C1-C4 or cobalt type high speed tools. Titanium and titanium alloy sheets can be cut to produce parts with edge finishes of aircraft quality. All Metals & Forge (AM&F) provides titanium sheet metal to machine shops and a diverse number of industries.

In addition to supplying titanium sheet, plate, wire, and other standard mill forms, AM&F can supply custom forgings to its customers through its open die forging facility. As a leading specialty supplier of metals and hard to find alloys, AM&F is also known for partnering with its customers to give them the information and solutions they need to get their projects done on time and in a cost-effective manner. Titanium Sheet Prices

The single most important factor driving titanium sheet prices on the demand side continues to be aerospace and airline orders. Titanium, due to its combination of low density, high strength, and resistance to corrosion and cracking even at high temperatures, is used by the aviation industry for a wide variety of applications. Titanium is an important component of jet airframes, for example.

The overall market in titanium sheet has been recovering over the past several years from the severe downturn in the airline industry precipitated by the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Although many airlines continue to struggle financially, consumer demand for air travel has not slackened, and the number of planes in operation is expected to increase substantially over the next several years. Additionally, demand for titanium on the military side of the aviation industry is expected to continue to increase.

The demand for titanium sheet by the consumer, industrial, and medical industries is traditionally somewhat less volatile than that of the aviation industry, and can generally be expected to rise as new applications are found for this abundant metal. Barring significant downturns in aviation demand, prices for titanium sheet can generally be expected to hold steady or rise in the near term future.

All Metals & Forge (AM&F) supplies titanium sheet and other specialty metals products to industries worldwide. AM&F dedicates itself to fair pricing for its customers and will make arrangements for long term contracts when price uncertainty is a concern. AM&F also works with its customers to help them find other ways to cut costs and increase efficiency. Titanium Tubes

Although titanium tubes may be most closely associated with the aircraft industry in many people’s minds, titanium tubing can be used in a variety of applications. Titanium tubes have been used in commercial refrigeration and cooling systems, for example, as they are not subject to corrosion from the refrigerant chemicals. Titanium tubes are also useful in environments where saltwater corrosion can be an issue, as in marine applications, off-shore drilling, and some power plants.

Titanium tubing can also be used in other industries where corrosive agents are routinely used, as in the pulp and paper and chemical processing industries. Titanium tubing is also being used in an increasing array of consumer goods, particularly in a variety of sports and outdoor equipment.

All Metals & Forge Group (AM&FG) supplies commercially pure grades of titanium and titanium alloys in standard mill forms, including tubes of various dimensions, and in custom forgings. To determine if the titanium tubes you want are kept in stock or can be custom made, you may use the AM&F product database. Start by choosing the titanium family of metals.

Choose a grade from the drop down menu. A list of stock and forged forms will appear. Choose the form you desire (e.g., seamless round tubes), and a list of available dimensions will display. If the form and dimensions you desire do not appear in the grade you select, be sure to contact AM&FG by email at info@steelforge.com or by phone at (973)276-5000, as they may be able to obtain or melt what you want. Titanium Tubing

All Metals & Forge (AM&F) is a steel service center with an open die and seamless rolled ring forging facility that supplies tubing to industries and machine shops. Titanium tubing is available in a number of dimensions and alloys.

Titanium tubing is often chosen because, as a corrosion-resistant, heat-resistant metal with a high strength to density ratio, it requires little maintenance compared to some other component metals. It is particularly useful in applications where environmental corrosives such as industrial pollution, sea water, chlorine, or other chemicals are present. Titanium is also an abundant metal with a seemingly ever-growing list of applications, particularly in the production of consumer goods, such as bicycles, fishing rods, and golf clubs.

Titanium tubing can be bent on conventional tube bending equipment. Although minimum bend-radius rules are nearly the same as those of stainless steel, titanium’s springback is greater. Titanium tube can be cold bent to radii three times the tube’s outer diameter, provided that both inside and outside surfaces of the bend are in tension at the point of bending. In some cases, tighter bends can also be made.

To request a quote on titanium tubing, you may use the online RFQ form on this website. You may also call us at (973)276-5000, or send an email to info@steelforge.com. We also encourage you to browse and bookmark the pages of this site for information on metallurgy, the steel industry, and market conditions.

Titanium Wire

Titanium wire is durable, corrosion resistant, and lightweight. Titanium’s springback is greater than that of conventional stainless steels, although hot forming reduces titanium’s springback and increases overall ductility. As a family, titanium and its alloys have developed a reputation for being difficult to work with and to machine.

This is not necessarily the case. Those experienced in working with titanium and its alloys have compared its characteristics to those found in 300 series stainless steels. Titanium wire should be cut with tungsten carbide C1-C4 or cobalt type tools.

When pondering the usefulness of titanium materials, consideration can be given not only to its suitability for the application, but its relative cost. The most popular alpha-beta titanium alloy (6Al-4V) is exceptionally strong compared to heavier steel alloys, so a relevant cost comparison between this titanium wire and stainless steel wire would be made based on linear foot rather than cost per pound. Titanium’s resistance to stress, heat, and corrosion make it a cost-effective choice in many applications.

All Metals & Forge (AM&F) is a supplier of specialty metals, including titanium in wire and other mill forms, as well as rare and hard to find alloys. The company’s motto is that if you don’t see it listed in the product database on the website, they can either find it or melt it for you. For more information on AM&F’s many products and services or to request a quote, please call (973) 276-5000, or send an email to info@steelforge.com.
