As the name implies, tool steel refers to a number of different high speed, carbon, and alloy steels that are used to make tools. Desirable features in tool steel include toughness, wear resistance, and strength at high temperatures. High speed steel is so-called because it is capable of cutting metal at higher speeds than carbon steels. High speed steel is said to have “red hardness” because it retains hardness and a sharp cutting even when the point of the tool reaches a low red temperature.
Tool steels require care in production, rolling, and forging to produce the desired level of quality. Development of the properties that characterize tool steels requires heat treating. Deformation can be a problem during quenching. Selecting the best alloy for an application calls for obtaining the desired characteristics with the least amount of deformation during quenching.
AM&F keeps dozens of grades of tool steel in stock. The company combines an extensive inventory with industry-leading product knowledge and a multitude of value added services for customers. Feel free to contact AM&F representatives by phone (973-276-5000) or email (info@steelforge.com) if you have any questions about selecting the right tool steel alloy, or to request a quote.
AM&F also provides a great deal of information on tool steel, and on the properties of various alloys through this website. Register as VIP user, and you’ll have access to all of AM&F’s online information resources on metallurgy and the steel industry.
All Metals & Forge (AM&F) is a leading tool steel supplier and forging facility serving customers nationally and internationally. All of the company’s steel products and processes are ISO ISO9001:2000 and AS9100 certified. Dozens of grades of tool steel are kept in stock.
Grades of tool steel billet material kept in stock include A2, A6, A10, D2, D3, D5, D6, H11, H12, H13, H21, and more. Requesting a quote is easy using the company’s online RFQ form. AM&F goes beyond other suppliers, though, by providing more than stock materials at set prices.
